The three core types are: • Cutting – Separating raw metal into accurate profiles and features using processes such as laser or CNC cutting. • Forming – Reshaping metal through bending, pressing, and similar processes without removing material. • Assembly – Joining fabricated metal components together into a finished product or structure.

Examples include: • Structural steel fabrication, such as steel beams and columns • Sheet metal fabrication, such as HVAC ductwork • Architectural metal fabrication, such as decorative metal railings • Industrial equipment fabrication, such as storage tanks and vessels • Commercial metal fabrication projects

One disadvantage is the need for secondary operations. Metal fabrication may require additional processes such as finishing, painting, and deburring. These extra steps can increase production time and cost.

Common sheet metal fabrication defects include burrs, cracks, wrinkles, thinning, warping, and corrosion. These can result from tool wear, poor material selection, or improper process control.

Sheet metal ranges up to approximately 6 mm thick. Material thicker than that is generally considered metal plate.

Metal fabrication involves creating products or structures by cutting, bending, and/or assembling metal material. It is a value-added process that converts raw metal into usable products and structures.
